Alvord Lake Bridge
Historic site · Golden Gate Park, California
The bridge by the Haight Street entrance, an ornamental structure with an imitation stone finish on its exterior and concrete stalactites hanging from inside its 20-foot span. The National Register nomination records that Alvord Bridge was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1969.
History
The bridge was built in 1889 to a design by the engineer Ernest Ransome, in the same year that the lily pond William Alvord had funded in 1882 was enlarged.
