Arcispedale di Santo Spirito in Saxia

Historic site · Borgo, Lazio

The hospital complex on the river side of Borgo, turned into a hospital by Innocent III in 1198 and now also a conference venue. The working hospital beside it is ASL Roma 1's Presidio S. Spirito in Sassia.

History

Italian Wikipedia traces the site to the Schola Saxonum founded by Ine, king of Wessex, at the beginning of the eighth century, and to a xenodochium founded in 794 by Offa of Mercia; Innocent III made it a hospital in 1198, the complex designed by Marchionne Aretino. Its long ward, the Corsia Sistina, was built for Sixtus IV: 120 metres by 12, facing Borgo Santo Spirito, divided under an octagonal tower by a tiburio into the Braccio di sotto and the Braccio di sopra. The altar at the centre of the tiburio is one that, in the source's own hedged phrasing, «dovrebbe essere» a work of Palladio in Rome — the attribution is hedged there and stays hedged here. The portale del Paradiso is attributed to Andrea Bregno, and beside it is the ruota degli esposti, the foundling wheel. A fresco cycle of more than fifty scenes was painted in 1478.
