Astoria Park Pool and Play Center

A New York City landmark inside Astoria Park, designated on June 20, 2006. Designation report LP-2196 says that "the Astoria Play Center commands a striking waterfront location in Astoria Park," and dates the opening of the pool complex to 1936.

History

Writing about Robert Moses's siting of the eleven WPA pools of 1936, LP-2196 states: "Moses was also known to have been insensitive to people of color, and tried to restrict access to many of his recreational facilities, including the pools. He determined that the Colonial Park pool in Harlem would be the only one for minority use. Most of the other pools, including Astoria, were placed in white neighborhoods."
