History

The account of Genovese's murder that was repeated for decades — that 38 witnesses watched and did nothing — is not what happened. A 2007 examination found "no evidence for the presence of 38 witnesses, or that witnesses observed the murder, or that witnesses remained inactive." Sophia Farrar went to Genovese and stayed with her until the ambulance came.
