Cappella di Santa Maria del Carmine e del Monte Libano

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Lazio

A deconsecrated aedicule chapel on piazza Costaguti, on a half-oval plan with a half-dome carried on six columns and two half-columns. It is seen from the square; no source states opening hours, so none are given here.

History

The chapel was built in 1759 by the devout of the neighbourhood and restored in 1825, which an inscription on the architrave records, again by the faithful in 1862, and again in 1876. It was profaned and then restored to worship in 1892. For much of the twentieth century a cobbler occupied it; it was then abandoned, and was recovered and conservatively restored in 2005 to a project by Arianna Cajano. Forced sermons to the Jews of the neighbouring ghetto were preached in the open square in front of it in the early evening.
