Caserma dei Vigili del Fuoco Alberto De Jacobis

Historic site · Testaccio, Lazio

The fire station at the corner of via Marmorata and via Luigi Galvani, designed by the architect Vincenzo Fasolo on a semicircular plan. The via Marmorata front has seven large doorways with flat arches, separated by rusticated pilasters whose capitals carry a fireman's helmet; the entrance at no. 15 is up seven steps between two plaques; the windows on this side are topped by a badge of a sword crossed with an axe; and a square tower on corbels rises over the internal courtyard.

History

The barracks was inaugurated on 28 October 1929. The sources do not agree on when it was built, giving three different spans and agreeing only on the inauguration, so no construction span is given here. It is named for the vice-brigadier Alberto De Jacobis, killed on 10 September 1943 during the German occupation of Rome, and has carried the dedication since 1994.
