The Castle Climbing Centre occupies the former Metropolitan Water Board engine house on Green Lanes, built in the form of a castle to serve the Stoke Newington reservoirs. It opens Monday to Friday 8am to 10pm, weekends 9am to 8pm and bank holidays 8am to 10pm, and holds a café and a garden. The building is Grade II* listed, NHLE 1226755, listed on 16 May 1972 as the Engine House of Metropolitan Water Board.
History
The operator states that the building was once a water pumping station and has spent the last thirty years growing into a climbing centre. Its grid reference on the National Heritage List is TQ 32314 86884. The ancillary building adjoining it to the north carries its own Grade II* entry, NHLE 1235562; the walls and railings to the former pumping station on the west side of Green Lanes are Grade II, NHLE 1390859; and the gas house west of the reservoir is Grade II, NHLE 1265631.
