Foro Olitorio

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Lazio

The site of the ancient vegetable market, between the Teatro di Marcello and the Foro Boario, on the street that still carries its name.

History

it.wikipedia describes a sacred area here with temples to Janus, Spes and Juno Sospita and a bronze elephant, the Elephas Herbarius. A fourth temple, built by Manius Acilius Glabrio, consul in 191 BC, stood next to the temple of Janus and was destroyed in the works for the Teatro di Marcello. Three of the temples are embedded in the basilica of San Nicola in Carcere, which was built over them.
