Ipogeo di via Livenza

Historic site · Pinciano, Lazio

Permanently closed. This page is kept for reference.

An underground late-antique hall between via Livenza and via Po, of which a trapezoidal fragment survives. Its north wall is articulated in three adjacent arches; the central one, richly frescoed and mosaicked and closed by two marble screens, holds a deep rectangular basin, 2.90 by 1.70 metres and 2.50 metres deep, with a water inlet and outlet and three steps down, the first of them very high, the stair keeping many of its original ancient treads. The building was about 21 by 7 metres, oriented north to south. A surviving mosaic fragment may show St Peter striking water from a rock to baptise a converted centurion. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina states that the site is temporarily closed to the public for works under the PNRR. Its published terms for when it opens are accompanied groups only, a maximum of ten people per visit, booking obligatory on 060608 between 09.00 and 19.00, and tickets at 4.00 euro full and 3.00 euro reduced, free for residents of Rome and the metropolitan area on production of proof of residence and for MIC card holders, with guided tours not included in the price.

History

The hypogeum was found in 1923, when the digging for a small block of flats between via Livenza and via Po brought an underground building to light and damaged its structures beyond repair. It is dated by consensus to the second half of the fourth century AD, and what it was for is still argued: a shrine of the Thracian goddess Cotys and the mystery sect of the Baptai, an early baptistery, a temple of a water cult, a place of magical practice, a meeting place for a syncretistic sect, or a nymphaeum built over an underground spring. It was restored in 2025 under the PNRR Caput Mundi programme.
