Monumento a Giuseppe Gioachino Belli

Historic site · Trastevere, Lazio

The monument to the poet of Rome's sonnets in romanesco, standing in the Trastevere piazza that faces Ponte Garibaldi. The bridge itself is recorded in this corpus under the rione Regola, where its centroid falls; the monument is in Trastevere.

History

Roma Capitale records that Michele Tripisciano (1860-1913) made it in travertine and marble in 1913, the fiftieth anniversary of Belli's death; that Domenico Gnoli and others proposed it to Mayor Nathan in 1910; that it was sited in the Trastevere piazza facing Ponte Garibaldi, then called piazza d'Italia; and that a public subscription reached 30,000 lire. The poet's right hand rests on a reconstruction of the parapet of Ponte Fabricio. The reliefs on the base show the Tiber personified and Pasquino among the populace, and twin fountains carry masks of Poetry and Satire.
