Palazzo Castellesi (Giraud, Torlonia)

Historic site · Borgo, Lazio

A palace built 1499–1517 for cardinal Adriano Castellesi of Corneto. Italian Wikipedia gives its present owners as the Torlonia del Fucino family and its use as a private residence.

History

The design is generally attributed to Bramante, and Italian Wikipedia hedges that attribution rather than asserting it; this guide keeps the hedge. The same article describes the façade as rereading Alberti's Palazzo Rucellai by way of the Palazzo della Cancelleria, with twin pilaster orders over smooth travertine ashlar, and the central courtyard as porticoed on all four sides on rectangular piers. The building served in turn as the English embassy, an ecclesiastical college and a hospice, and was known afterwards as Palazzo Giraud and then Palazzo Torlonia. It originally faced piazza Scossacavalli; the demolition of the spina left its façade standing on the edge of via della Conciliazione.
