Palazzo Odescalchi Simonetti

Historic site · Prati, Lazio

An apartment palace at the corner of via Pietro Cavallini, four joined blocks around a large courtyard, fronting also via Muzio Clementi and via Marianna Dionigi. Roma Segreta describes a rusticated front with bifore on the first and second floors, and the Odescalchi arms - a crowned black eagle, a passant leopard-lion and six censer-boats - carved on the corner façade.

History

It was begun for Prince Baldassarre Ladislao Odescalchi. This guide publishes no architect: the three sources consulted give three incompatible accounts, one crediting Francesco Fontana with a later remodelling by Carlo Busiri Vici, one crediting Fontana with completion by Raffaello Ojetti for the painter Attilio Simonetti, and one crediting Raffaele Ojetti after an 1887 fire at the Odescalchi palace elsewhere in Rome. An unresolved three-way attribution is not settled here by choosing the tidiest version. Italian Wikipedia and Roma Segreta both record that Luigi Pirandello lived in the palace and that his daughter Rosalia was born there.
