Parade Ground

Park · Van Cortlandt Park, New York

A sprawling lawn in Van Cortlandt Park, originally grain fields. The National Guard used it for brigade practice, and it has hosted recreational facilities and concerts.

History

In 1781 Washington's and Rochambeau's troops waited on what is now the Parade Ground and Vault Hill while the generals strategized inside the Van Cortlandt House. The lawn was restored using construction-mitigation funds from the Croton Water Filtration Plant project.
