Ponte Duca d'Aosta

Historic site · Flaminio, Lazio

A bridge over the Tiber connecting the quartieri Flaminio and Della Vittoria; it lies in both. It is reinforced concrete faced entirely in Tivoli travertine, 222.3 metres long and 30 metres wide, of which 21 metres of carriageway and two footways of 4 metres, carried on three segmental arches.

History

A bridge in this position was foreseen in Del Debbio's 1927 scheme for the Foro Mussolini, as its scenographic entrance from Flaminio. The Ministry of Public Works tendered a competition in 1935 which drew 18 entries, among them Ballio Morpurgo, Aschieri, Vaccaro and Del Debbio; Vincenzo Fasolo won it, with the structural engineer Aurelio Aureli. Work began on 21 June 1936 and the bridge was inaugurated on 26 March 1939.
