Porta Asinaria

Historic site · Monti, Lazio

A gate in the Aurelian wall that originally carried the Via Asinaria through a single arch between two square towers.

History

Roma Capitale records that it was monumentalised in the early fifth century under Honorius (395–423) with two semicircular towers and a travertine-faced arch, an inner counter-gate and a guard court, its towers raised to nearly double their height, to four storeys. Belisarius entered Rome by it in 536, Totila ten years later, and Henry IV during the sack.
