Santa Caterina da Siena in via Giulia

Historic site · Regola, Lazio

The church of the Sienese community in Rome, still held by its arciconfraternita. The façade is in the manner of Borromini, and Romulus, Remus and the she-wolf, the emblem of Siena, flank the central window.

History

Sienese merchants and bankers lived along via Giulia from the fifteenth century. Leo X recognised their confraternity in 1519, and in 1526 the church, oratory and clergy house were entrusted to Baldassarre Peruzzi, funded by Sienese nobility including Cardinal Giovanni Piccolomini and the banker Agostino Chigi. Tiber floods ruined the building and it was rebuilt entirely to a design by Paolo Posi between 1766 and 1775, the year the new altar was consecrated. Genga's Resurrezione altarpiece was restored in 2008 for the street's 500th anniversary.
