The cattle-market district between the Tiber, the Capitoline, the Palatine and the Aventine, with the Republican temples of Portunus and Hercules Victor facing the river. Turismo Roma describes it as an area open to the public.

History

The ground was anciently occupied by the Velabrum marsh, drained by the Etruscan kings in the sixth century BC with the building of the Cloaca Maxima, whose arches are still visible. The Portus Tiberinus, ascribed to Servius Tullius in the same century, lay where the Anagrafe offices now stand. Imperial works here include Trajanic warehouses, of AD 98-117, by the river port, the Arch of the Argentarii of AD 204 and the four-fronted arch of Janus, probably of the time of Constantius II, AD 337-361.
