Roald Amundsen Monument

Historic site · Golden Gate Park, California

A monument of red Norwegian granite and bronze by Hans Jauchen, north of the Beach Chalet, with a second bronze plaque of 2000 by John and Rolph Kricken.

History

The monument honours Roald Amundsen, who completed the crossing of the Northwest Passage in 1906, making the voyage around the top of North America in a small sloop, the Gjoa, and completing the journey in San Francisco. The crew was honoured by the city and the Gjoa was placed at Ocean Beach. The monument was dedicated in 1929, and the Gjoa remained at the monument until 1972, when it was returned to Norway.
