St Mary the Virgin, Northolt

Historic site · Northolt, England

St Mary the Virgin stands above the old village green on Ealing Road, UB5 6AA, and is listed Grade I as NHLE 1079414. It was built around 1290 and its nave measures 15 yards (14 m) by 8 yards (7.3 m). Twin brick buttresses were added around 1718 to stop the church sliding down its hill.

History

The Grade I listing, NHLE 1079414, was first made on 24 February 1950. The square bell turret with its broach spire is early 16th century, and the octagonal stone font is 14th century with a wooden cover dated 1624. The church holds brasses to Henry Rowdell, who died in 1452, and to Isaiah Bures, vicar from 1596 to 1610, a 17th-century carving of the Stuart arms on the east wall, and four early 17th-century bells with a sanctus bell cast in 1626. The Northolt Manor moated site lies below the church behind the village green and is a scheduled monument, NHLE 1001978, scheduled on 16 December 1982 over 0.97 hectares: a 14th-century manor excavated from the 1950s onwards, with the archaeological evidence pointing to an 8th-century Saxon village close to the manor rather than on the moated site itself.
