Via del Portico d'Ottavia

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Lazio

The spine of the Jewish quarter, running from the Portico d'Ottavia, with most of the rione's restaurants and food shops along it.

History

The fishmongers of the quarter sold on marble slabs rented at high prices from noble families. The copy of the marble slab that fixed the maximum length of fish that could be sold whole is on the wall by the Portico; Roma Capitale states that the original is in the Musei Capitolini, and carries the full inscription with a translation on its page for the rione.
