The Williamsburg Bridge over the East River

A suspension bridge with a walkable pedestrian and bicycle path connecting Williamsburg to Manhattan's Lower East Side.

History

Construction began in 1896 under chief engineer Leffert L. Buck, with Gustav Lindenthal overseeing the final phase, and the bridge opened on December 19, 1903 at a cost of $11 million. The Brooklyn approach was routed to avoid the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Building, and building it required relocating roughly 10,000 people.
