Chiesa di Santa Bibiana

Historic site · Esquilino, Lazio

A church on via Giovanni Giolitti, standing on the site of the Horti Liciniani. Its façade and its statue of the saint are by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

History

Two traditions of foundation are recorded: 363, by the matron Olimpina, and 467 under Simplicius, per the Liber pontificalis. Leo II translated the relics of the martyrs Simplicius, Faustinus and Beatrice here. Honorius III restored the church in 1224 and added a women's monastery beside it, and Urban VIII ordered its complete rebuilding.
