Chiesa dei Santi Giorgio e Martiri inglesi

Historic site · Campo Marzio, Lazio

The English Catholic church on via di San Sebastianello, opened to the public on 5 November 1887 and served by an English women's congregation, the Poor Servants of the Mother of God, who occupy the attached convent.

History

it.wikipedia records that the church was built with a large donation from Prince Alessandro Torlonia and erected in memory of Lady Georgiana Fullerton, the congregation's founder, by her husband, and in memory also of their son William. The high altar canvas of St Gregory the Great is by A. Dies; the altar was Torlonia's gift and came from the demolished church of Santa Teresa alle Quattro Fontane, while the Madonna and Sacred Heart altars came from the demolished Sant'Elisabetta dei Fornari. The wall decoration is by Eugenio Cisterna.
