Fontana in Piazza Nicosia

Historic site · Campo Marzio, Lazio

One object with five addresses across four centuries. The Sovrintendenza records it as designed by Giacomo Della Porta in 1572 and originally set at the centre of piazza del Popolo, one of the public fountains built after the acquedotto Vergine was reactivated. it.wikipedia calls it the Fontana del Trullo, from piazza del Trullo, the older name of piazza del Popolo.

History

The Sovrintendenza records that a Falda engraving of 1665 shows the original form, an octagonal basin with two concentric round bowls on four dolphins. The fountain was dismantled around 1820 for Valadier's redesign of piazza del Popolo, rebuilt in the small square in front of San Pietro in Montorio on the Janiculum, removed again to municipal stores, and finally set in piazza Nicosia in 1950, in a new opening designed by Marcello Piacentini, 1881 to 1960, after the demolitions of 1936. The octagonal basin is the original element; a cipollino baluster carries a bowl decorated on the outside with Borghese heraldry. The travertine bollard fence was added in the restoration of 1998.
