The main square of the excavated town, at the crossing of the Cardo Massimo and the Decumano Massimo in the middle of the old castrum: long, narrow and flanked by porticoes, with the Capitolium at the north end and the temple of Rome and Augustus facing it from the south.
History
The forum was laid out under Augustus and transformed under Hadrian. The temple of Rome and Augustus on the south side, in axis with the Capitolium, may have been built while Augustus was still alive, in the early first century AD; its substructures survive together with marble architectural elements, including the rear pediment and a flying Victory, re-mounted on a modern wall beside the building.
