Palazzo Blumenstihl

An apartment palace with four fronts - via Vittoria Colonna, via Pietro Cavallini, via dei Cosmati 4, where the iron gate is dated 1890, and the grandest on lungotevere dei Mellini. The embankment front has an attic belvedere with a pedimented loggia of three serliane and a long balustraded balcony on four composite columns, forming a triple triumphal entrance. The Gran Caffè Esperia is under that entrance.

History

Roma Segreta records that the palace was built in 1890 by the architect Luca Carimini for the Blumenstihl family, of Alsatian origin, who had served the Holy See in the papal army, and that Bernardo Blumenstihl was one of the founders of the Società Italiana per le Condotte d'Acqua. It stands on the site of a theatre destroyed by fire; the sources contradict each other on when that theatre stood and when it burned. Italian Wikipedia names the building as the seat of the Istituto Polacco di Cultura.
