Piazza Dante

Historic site · Esquilino, Lazio

A square between via Alfieri and via Giusti, dedicated to Dante. A monument to the poet was designed for it and never built. The gardens at its centre are dedicated to Mary and Hasib Begum, who died in a fire in via Buonarroti on 13 January 2007, and they reopened at the beginning of 2021.

History

The square was called piazza Leonardo da Vinci until 1945, because Dante was to be given an avenue in the E42 that was never built. During the Second World War it held an underground public air-raid shelter; in the 1980s the underground rooms were taken over by an Enel substation. Palazzo Dante, on the square, has been the unified seat of the Italian intelligence services since May 2019.
