Porta Tiburtina (Porta San Lorenzo)

Historic site · Esquilino, Lazio

A gate in the Aurelian Walls, also called Porta San Lorenzo, standing on via di Porta Tiburtina and in the charge of the Sovrintendenza Capitolina. The boundary between the rione and the quartiere Tiburtino beyond it is the street, not the gate, so the gate stands in Esquilino.

History

The gate began as an Augustan arch of 5 BC and was built into the Aurelian Walls in 275 AD.
