The Polo Field

Park · Golden Gate Park, California

The oval in the middle of the park, formally the Golden Gate Park Stadium. A 10-foot-high graded berm, with a trotting track on top, encloses the 17-acre field; eighteen sections of concrete stands line the embankment on the north side and another six sections on the south side.

History

The stadium was built between 1906 and 1909 to a design by the architect brothers James and Merritt Reid. One 200-foot-long experimental section of the grand stadium was built in 1909. It included a trotting track on the outside perimeter, a cinder path for bicycles inside the stadium, and space for polo and football in the centre, large enough for six football fields.
