Santa Brigida

Historic site · Regola, Lazio

The Swedish national church, on piazza Farnese, with a late-Baroque façade begun in 1705, two Corinthian columns and statues of Brigida and Catherine above the tympanum; the slender red-brick campanile is late nineteenth century. Phone 06 68892596; www.brigidine.org.

History

Birgitta Birgersdotter reached Rome in 1349, and the small church was dedicated to her in 1391, the year after her canonisation. It forms one complex with the hospice she had built and with the house where she and her daughter Catherine of Sweden lived until their deaths. The barrel vault was frescoed in 1709 by Biagio Puccini with the Gloria di santa Brigida, and six canvases of her life are by the same hand. On the right altar is a late-seventeenth-century copy of a lost Annibale Carracci Madonna col Bambino, and the funerary monument to Nils Bielke of 1768 is by Tommaso Righi to designs by Pietro Camporese the Elder. The Bridgettine sisters have held the church again since 1931.
