Ponte Palatino

Built between 1886 and 1890 to the design of the engineer Angelo Vescovali, with a Belgian firm specialising in iron bridges and the Officina dell'Impresa Industriale Italiana for the metalwork, to serve the crossing the Pons Aemilius had once carried. It is a plain structure without the great arches of most Roman bridges and without heavy ornament apart from the metal lattice with lozenge elements joining its sections. Romans once held the partita a rocci, or sassaiola, the mass stone-throwing between the men of Testaccio and Trastevere, on this bridge.
