History

The site is identified with the titulus Aquilae et Priscillae, the parents of St Prisca, who by tradition was baptised by St Peter at thirteen and martyred in the first century; the same tradition places both Peter and Paul here. In the third century, under Pope Eutychian, her body was found and the site dedicated to her. The hagiography has her imprisoned under Claudius for refusing to venerate Apollo, scourged and condemned to the beasts in the Circus Maximus, where the lions lay at her feet; thrown on a pyre and unharmed, she was finally beheaded at the tenth milestone of the via Ostiense. After several restorations, one following the devastation by Robert Guiscard's Normans in 1084, the church took its present form in 1599.
