Tempio di Apollo Sosiano

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Lazio

Three re-erected columns of a temple of Apollo, adjoining the Teatro di Marcello.

History

A cult of Apollo existed on the site by the middle of the 5th century BC. The first temple building was dedicated in 431 BC by the consul Gnaeus Julius after a plague, restored in 353 BC and worked on again in 179 BC. Gaius Sosius rebuilt it from about 34 BC, and the three standing columns belong to that rebuilding. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina describes a portico found in the late 1930s during the works to rebuild Santa Rita and the Palazzetto di Flaminio Ponzio, running along the east and north sides of the temple of Bellona toward the temple of Apollo, its piers part peperino and part brick faced with stucco imitating column fluting, with travertine paving.
