Italian Wikipedia credits the design to Marcello Piacentini and Attilio Spaccarelli, dates construction from 1936 on the demolition of the Spina di Borgo, and records that the street was completed for the Jubilee of 1950. It is named for the Lateran Pacts of 11 February 1929. The same article, citing Leonardo Benevolo, calls it «una delle opere urbanistiche più discusse e aspramente criticate del Novecento» — which it translates as widely discussed and criticised town planning of the twentieth century — and adds that Benevolo, Cederna, Vannelli and Insolera are all severely critical of it. That is attributed criticism and not this guide's verdict. Largo Giovanni XXIII, at the river end, is given as the street's inizio and carries no separate record here. Palazzo Rusticucci-Accoramboni, built for cardinal Girolamo Rusticucci by Domenico Fontana and Carlo Maderno, was demolished and rebuilt on the street in 1940 by Clemente Busiri Vici; before that it faced piazza Rusticucci, which was itself destroyed in the 1930s.
