Villa Aldobrandini

Park · Monti, Lazio

A hanging garden held inside retaining walls, entered from via Mazzarino by a steep stair.

History

Roma Capitale records that Monsignor Giulio Vitelli bought a vineyard at Monte Magnanapoli in 1566 and that Carlo Lambardi restored the property; that it was sold to Clement VIII in 1600 and given the following year to his nephew Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini; and that Giacomo Della Porta added the stairs, the loggias and a continuous garden facade. The art collection had been left to the cardinal in 1598 by Lucrezia d'Este. The opening of via Nazionale after 1870 drastically cut the grounds.
