A 718-acre city park, the eighth-largest in New York City, bounded by Southern Boulevard to the southwest, Webster Avenue to the northwest, Gun Hill Road to the north, Bronx Park East to the east and East 180th Street to the south. Fordham Road divides it between the New York Botanical Garden, which occupies the northern section, and the Bronx Zoo, which occupies the southern; the Bronx River runs 2 miles (3.2 km) through it.
History
Much of the land came to the city under the 1884 New Parks Act, from Fordham University and from the Lorillard family, who operated a snuff mill on the estate. Lake Agassiz and Bronx Lake lie within the park, along with waterfalls and ponds, and a 35-acre "Forever Wild" nature preserve occupies part of the northern section. Adjacent neighborhoods are Pelham Parkway to the east, West Farms to the south and Belmont to the west.
