Lorillard Snuff Mill above the Bronx River

A stone mill built around 1840 by the P. Lorillard Company beside the Bronx River, of locally quarried schist, standing on Snuff Mill Road within the New York Botanical Garden's grounds. Its own Wikipedia article calls it the oldest existing tobacco manufacturing building in the United States. It is now the Lillian and Amy Goldman Stone Mill and holds Garden staff offices and a catering facility.

History

The Lorillard firm had moved its operations to this Bronx site in 1792 and abandoned the mill in 1870, when it went to Jersey City. The building was designated a New York City Landmark on April 19, 1966, then a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1977, reference number 77000935, and entered on the New York State Register on June 23, 1980. A renovation in 1952–54 added a café, a patio and a meeting room, and a $10.5 million restoration was completed in 2010.
