Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Piscibus

Historic site · Borgo, Lazio

A twelfth-century church swallowed inside the twentieth-century buildings along one side of via della Conciliazione and piazza Pio XII; Italian Wikipedia records that its apse is still visible from Borgo Santo Spirito. It is the seat of the Centro Internazionale Giovanile San Lorenzo.

History

Italian Wikipedia dates the church to the twelfth century and notes a tradition ascribing it to Santa Galla in the sixth. The name in piscibus comes from the quarter's old name, Piscina, and possibly from a medieval fish market. When via della Conciliazione was cut the church was radically transformed and absorbed into the new frontage rather than demolished. It lies within the parish of Santa Maria in Traspontina and carries a cardinal-deacon's title.
