A square at the via Arenula end of the rione, enlarged repeatedly and above all when via Arenula was opened at the end of the nineteenth century. Roma Capitale states that the church of Santi Biagio e Carlo ai Catinari, which stands on the square, was once inside the perimeter of rione Regola but today belongs to rione Sant'Eustachio, and this guide does not write it.

History

The square was formerly also called Tagliacozza, from houses belonging to Isabella Orsini, lady of Tagliacozzo. It is dedicated to Benedetto Cairoli (1825–1889), who fought at the Cinque Giornate di Milano and at Custoza, Varese, Calatafimi and Mentana, was Garibaldi's aide in the Spedizione dei Mille, was deputy for Pavia for thirty years, and was afterwards President of the Council and minister of foreign affairs and of agriculture. Roma Capitale's page on the rione records that he lived at no. 113 of the square later named for him.
