An appetizing store founded in 1914 by Joel Russ, a Jewish immigrant from Poland who had sold pickled herring and mushrooms from a pushcart before taking a storefront. It specializes in Jewish delicacies, particularly pickled herring and smoked fish such as lox and sturgeon. Russ renamed it Russ & Daughters in 1933 after making his three daughters, Hattie, Anne and Ida, partners; it is now run by the fourth generation.
History
It received the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award in 2013, reported as the first restaurant to receive it, and the Financial Times named it among the '50 greatest food stores in the world' in 2021. It appeared in the 2008 PBS documentary 'The Jews of New York,' and the family's history was the subject of the 2014 documentary 'The Sturgeon Queens.' Beyond the Houston Street shop it has opened on Orchard Street, at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and at Hudson Yards in July 2023.
