Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery

A knish bakery established in 1890 by Yonah Schimmel, an immigrant from Galicia; the Houston Street storefront opened in 1910. It remains family-owned, currently run by Schimmel's great-nephew Alex Wolfman, and sells potato and kasha knishes, dessert varieties such as cherry-cheese and blueberry-cheese, and other Eastern European food such as borscht from a takeout counter. It is certified CupK Kosher and ships through Goldbelly.
History
A portrait of the bakery by the artist Hedy Pagremanski is held in the Museum of the City of New York's permanent collection, and the shop appeared in Woody Allen's 2009 film 'Whatever Works.'
