Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry

A car-and-passenger ferry crossing roughly 18 miles of Long Island Sound to Port Jefferson, New York, run by the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company. The fleet is the MV Park City (1986), the MV P.T. Barnum (1999), the MV Grand Republic (2003) and the MV Long Island, which entered service in December 2024.

History

The service was founded in 1883 by P. T. Barnum and the seaman Charles E. Tooker. The fleet moved from steamships to motor vessels in 1968, and year-round service began in the 1980s. In 2009 the company won a lawsuit against the Bridgeport Port Authority over what the company described as unconstitutional tax collection, recovering $1.1 million in damages.
