The Drawing Center

A museum devoted to drawing and works on paper, at 35 Wooster Street in a 19th-century cast-iron building. Its stated mission is to present drawing as "primary, dynamic, and relevant to contemporary culture," and its exhibitions have featured drawings by tattoo artists, chefs, novelists and prisoners alongside visual artists.

History

Founded in 1977 by Martha Beck, a former assistant curator of drawings at the Museum of Modern Art, in a ground-floor warehouse space at 137 Greene Street; it moved to 35 Wooster Street in 1987. A $10 million renovation designed by Claire Weisz of WXY Architecture & Urban Design was completed in 2012, expanding the museum to two and a half floors and roughly 50% more exhibition space. Laura Hoptman, a former MoMA curator, was appointed executive director in 2018, when stated annual attendance was about 55,000; first-year attendance in 1977 was reported at 125,000.
