The Mercer

Hotel · SoHo, New York

A hotel of 73 guest rooms across six floors, roughly 84,000 square feet in all, with interiors by the Parisian designer Christian Liaigre. Sartiano's is the restaurant on site, with an open kitchen, a Carrara marble bar and Hollywood-style banquettes, and Alfred Portale as culinary lead. Its sister property is The Greenwich Hotel.

History

The building went up in 1890 as office space for the Astor family holdings of John Jacob Astor III, designed by William Schickel, an architect known for his extensive work on behalf of the Archdiocese of New York, and was later used as artists' lofts and studios. BD Hotels and André Balazs acquired it in 1988 and opened the hotel in 1997. Mercer Kitchen held the restaurant space from 1998 to 2022; Sartiano's opened in June 2023 under Scott Sartiano with chef Alfred Portale, and the Submercer lounge reopened in 2024.
